Inspiration from the Barrier Islands

Growing up, I have always loved the beach. I had family in Florida and would visit them often as a child. Those were some of my favorite childhood memories. This last year we moved to the barrier islands in Florida. I joked with my husband John last week that I just realized we live on an island. It only took a year for that to set in. I’m fascinated with the large and small birds that walk the streets and beaches. They don’t seem to fear people. But trust me to be careful feeding them. I felt bad for the older or solo birds on the beach, so I took them some bread. Let’s say all the other birds must have radar when it comes to food. Those birds were not alone for long. I’m also fascinated with all the colors of homes and plant life. I decided to work on a series called “It Takes a Village,” which often I might put a bird on it. Enjoy!

Painting My Little Monsters

Painting My Little Monsters

It has been a while that I worked with canvas and paints. I have all the good intentions to paint, but something always gets in the way. This year I decided that this will all change. I have a stack of canvases and a blank wall in my studio begging to be covered with art.

When I paint, I’m in a zone. I love when I’m in the zone. The place that I can only describe as pure joy. Nothing else matters when I’m there other than creating and going with the flow. That first color choice and first brush stroke are always the scariest. Is this the right color? Should I use this brush? How big should I make the monster? Then it happens. All the questions just float away on invisible balloons and I’m left painting in the zone. Pure Joy.

I hope this moment of a creative journey sparks something in your inner artist to journey into the zone.
